What are Braces?

Braces (fixed orthodontic appliances) are a dental solution for aligning teeth using a system of brackets (metal or ceramic) fixed onto the teeth, combined with archwires and interarch elastics. This appliance system exerts continuous biological forces, helping to move protruding, recessed, spaced, or crowded teeth into the correct bite position, resulting in a harmonious and beautiful smile.

Common Types of Braces Methods

mac-cai-kim-loai

  • Metal Braces: The classic method with the most cost-effective, durable, and powerful alignment capabilities, even for complex misalignments.
  • Ceramic Aesthetic Braces: Brackets made from high-quality ceramic material that matches the natural tooth color, ensuring high aesthetics throughout the treatment.
  • Self-Ligating Braces: Features an automatic sliding mechanism that holds the archwire in the bracket slot instead of using elastics, reducing friction, discomfort, and shortening treatment time by 3 - 6 months.
  • MEAW Technique (Multi-loop Edgewise Archwire): A specialized orthodontic method using multi-loop archwires to successfully treat Class III skeletal discrepancies (severe underbite) or complex open bites without jaw surgery.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Metal braces are the most traditional and long-standing orthodontic method, yet they remain the most effective and cost-efficient. This method uses a system of high-grade alloy brackets (such as stainless steel or titanium) fixed to the outer surface of the teeth, combined with archwires and elastic bands to apply continuous pressure, moving the teeth into the correct position on the dental arch. This method is suitable for all ages (especially students) and effectively addresses cases from simple misalignments to complex issues (overbite, underbite, severe crowding).

In the first few days after attaching the braces or after each periodic tightening, you may feel slight discomfort, irritation, or a foreign body sensation in the lips and cheeks. This is a completely normal physiological response indicating that the teeth are moving. This sensation will quickly subside within 3 to 5 days as the body adjusts to the appliance.

Since metal brackets and archwires are attached directly to the outer surface of the teeth, this method is more noticeable when you smile or speak compared to ceramic or clear aligners. However, there are now ultra-small (mini) metal brackets available to reduce bulkiness, or you can choose colorful elastics to add a fun touch for young patients.

To prevent brackets from coming loose or wires from bending, pay attention to your diet:

Prioritize soft, liquid, easy-to-chew foods like porridge, soup, soft rice, minced meat, eggs, milk... especially in the first few days after tightening.

Avoid hard foods (bones, hard nuts, ice), sticky or chewy foods (gum, chewy candies), or foods that require strong biting (whole apples, hard corn) and cut food into small pieces before eating.

Teeth can indeed shift back to their original position if a retainer is not worn. This is because after removing the braces, the periodontal ligaments around the tooth roots need time to restructure and stabilize firmly in the new jawbone. Therefore, adhering to the retainer (Retainer) instructions strictly given by the dentist (wearing it consistently in the initial months and gradually transitioning to nighttime wear) is crucial to maintaining a permanently straight smile.
