What Are Aesthetic Dental Crowns?

Aesthetic dental crown placement is an advanced restorative dental procedure that uses a high-grade porcelain crown to cover a carefully prepared natural tooth. The porcelain crown replicates the exact shape, color, contours, and functions of a natural tooth—masking aesthetic imperfections while restoring chewing strength to damaged teeth.

When Should You Consider Aesthetic Dental Crowns?

  • Severely decayed teeth or teeth with root canal treatment: Teeth become brittle and prone to fracture after endodontic treatment; placing a crown helps protect and preserve the remaining natural tooth structure over the long term.

  • Chipped, cracked, or severely worn teeth: Cases caused by trauma, impact, or teeth grinding where more than one-third of the tooth is lost and standard fillings are no longer viable.

  • Gapped or slightly misaligned teeth: Quickly aligns the dental axis and closes unsightly gaps without requiring long-term orthodontic braces.

  • Severe discoloration and yellowing: Intrinsic stains caused by Tetracycline antibiotics or excess fluoride that cannot be resolved with conventional teeth whitening.

Key Advantages

su-tham-my (1)

  • Superior Aesthetics: Modern porcelain crowns match the shade, translucency, and natural surface grooves of real teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable to the naked eye.

  • High Durability: Exceptional resistance to chewing forces, with premium ceramic materials even surpassing the strength of natural enamel.

  • Safe & Biocompatible: Premium all-ceramic crowns are gentle on gum tissue, will not discolor over time, and do not create dark lines along the gum margin.

  • Fast Treatment Time: The entire process typically takes only 2 to 4 days (around 2 to 3 appointments).

Common Types of Dental Crowns

  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns (Standard & Titanium): Feature a metal alloy framework layered with porcelain. They are cost-effective; however, oxidation over time may lead to a dark discoloration along the gumline.

  • All-Ceramic (Metal-Free) Crowns: Crafted entirely from pure ceramic blocks (such as Cercon, Zirconia, Lava). They offer flawless aesthetics, a lifespan of 10 to 20 years or more with proper care, and completely eliminate the risk of black gum borders.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The extent of tooth reduction depends on the condition of the teeth and the restoration method. With traditional porcelain crowns, the dentist needs to reduce about 0.8 - 1.5mm of enamel to create space for the crown. If you choose porcelain veneers, the reduction is extremely minimal (only 0.3 - 0.5mm), and in many cases, no reduction is needed, preserving the original tooth to the maximum extent.

Very durable. High-end all-ceramic crowns (such as Cercon, Zirconia, Emax, Oros) can withstand chewing forces 4 - 7 times greater than natural teeth. The average lifespan ranges from 10 to 20 years, or they can last indefinitely with proper oral care habits.

Aesthetic porcelain crown placement is a dental restoration method using a porcelain crown that mimics the shape, size, and color of natural teeth to cover the prepared tooth. This method is indicated for cases such as chipped or broken teeth, severely decayed teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, heavily discolored teeth that cannot be whitened, misaligned teeth, mild overbite/underbite, or diastema for comprehensive aesthetic improvement.

Not all porcelain crown placements require root canal treatment. The dentist will recommend it in cases where the tooth is severely decayed close to the pulp chamber, has pulpitis, or needs significant angle correction. If the tooth is healthy and only requires aesthetic porcelain coverage, the dentist will preserve the natural tooth pulp to the maximum extent. Proper tooth reduction according to medical standards will not damage the tooth root or affect the long-term lifespan of the tooth.

Genuine porcelain crowns (such as Cercon, Lava, Zirconia...) usually come with an official warranty card from the manufacturer, have a clear traceable serial number, natural translucency similar to real teeth under all lighting conditions, and do not discolor or cause gum line darkening over time. In contrast, low-quality porcelain crowns often have an opaque color, are prone to yellowing, lack a valid warranty card, and can cause gum irritation and prolonged sensitivity.
